Inside Look at DocGraph

This dataset shows how Medicare providers in the United States work together, providing the most detailed and current picture of the patient-sharing relationships between providers in the US healthcare system that is publicly available.

The goal of our implied-referral data is to:

Reflect referrals and collaborations between healthcare providers by showing the number of patients they share in common.
Reveal the directionality of the referral relationships

DocGraph contains the following data fields:

*National Provider Identifier (NPI) - a unique identifier assigned to a person or institution that bills for services in the U.S. CMS releases information for each NPI on their NPPES data download site.

Impact of DocGraph

The dataset provides valuable insights into the relationships between different healthcare providers and helps researchers understand the healthcare system and inform efforts to improve patient outcomes.

For example, it has been used to study:

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare provider networks and the efficiency of care
The growth of independent freestanding emergency departments and its effect on the rural emergency physician workforce
The dispersion of hospital networks and its impact on the efficiency of care
Opportunities to improve data interoperability and integration in support of value-based care
